  • For inflation protection, iShares offers Barclays TIPS Bond ETF (TIP).  The fund has 29 different notes and bonds ranging from an issued maturity of 1-5 years (35%), an issued maturity of 5-10 years (33%), and an issued maturity of 15-20 years (29%).  TIP charges a slightly higher expense ratio than the other iShares funds, at 0.20% and trades over one-million shares on average.

  • iShares also offer the only T-Bond ETF, Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond (TLT).  The fund holds 11 different bonds, with 16% issued with a maturity of 20-25 years and 82% issued with a maturity of 25+ years.  TLT trades over 3.5 million shares on average and charges an expense ratio of 0.15%.

  • iShares offers three ETFs that hold Treasury Notes.  The first fund, Barclays Short Treasury Bond (SHV), holds 27 different notes, all issued with a maturity of less than one year.  The fund trades 280,000 shares on average.  The second iShares’ fund, Barclays 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF (SHY), has a total of 53 different notes, with 97.5% issued at a maturity of 1-3 years.  SHY has the highest trading volume of the three Treasury note ETFs at over one-million shares.  The third iShares ETF, Barclays 3-7 Year Treasury Bond (IEI), has a mix of 27 different notes

  • There is only one ETF that invests exclusively in T-Bills, SPDR’s Barclays Capital 1-3 Month T-Bill EFT (BIL).  This fund holds nine different T-Bills and charges an expense ratio of 0.14%.  BIL trades in an extremely narrow range and currently pays a minuscule dividend, due to the current interest rates set by the Fed.
